According to the Malaysia Information Department, as of 18 May, 64,046 children in Malaysia have been infected with Covid-19.

Rina added that the increasing number of cumulative infection of Covid-19 among children is worrying.

“I encourage everyone, especially parents, guardians, care centre operators, nursery owners, caregivers, and anyone who has a connection to or interacts with children to increase their awareness of the dangers of this pandemic,” said Rina.

She suggests that research on the effectiveness of the vaccine on children under 18 years old, must be done quickly.

She also urged that the 18,621 caretakers at 5,326 social welfare department registered child care centres be given priority to get the vaccine to ensure a safe environment for the children.

Last year, it was reported that Malaysia does not plan to vaccinate children and teenagers under 18 years old as they only make up 30% of the population and they will be protected by herd immunity.
