The rakyat themselves are to blame for the recent Covid-19 outbreaks in Terengganu, according to state Health Director Dr Nor Azimi Yunus.

Commenting on the current state of affairs under her jurisdiction, Dr Nor Azimi went on Facebook with a word of caution for the citizens of Terengganu to abide by Covid-19 health guidelines or suffer the consequences.

“We weren’t at all surprised (by the rise in cases). Because it was the mannerism of the people of Terengganu that gave room for Covid-19 to have fun in Terengganu,” wrote the doctor, revealing her frustration towards the increasing number of infections in the state.

As of 18 May, 5,941 Covid-19 cases were recorded in Terengganu.

This spike, Dr Nor Azimi explained, was directly caused by the people’s neglect towards SOPs and health guidelines.

Dr Nor Azimi continued with sharing five separate ‘true stories’ that happened in Terengganu which had led to outbreaks and infection clusters in the state;

Story 1

18 friends had hung out together at an empty house in Setiu. That single ‘lepak’ session resulted in 17 people getting infected – the people who were there and their family members.

A total of 162 close contacts were identified from the particular case.

Story 2

An individual was found positive of Covid-19 during  health screenings for employment purposes in Johor. Later, tests were done to his family and close contacts in Dungun, Terengganu. Overall, 41 people were confirmed to be infected with coronavirus and 245 close contacts were identified.

Apparently a few of the infected individuals were living within the same compound and regularly visited each other despite SOPs discouraging people to do so.

Story 3 – Bukit Pauh Cluster

78 people tested positive for Covid-19 and 496 other people were labeled as close contacts after 20 people attended a ‘buka puasa’ dinner in Dungun.

The case spread to Kuala Terengganu when individuals from the buka puasa event later had ‘moreh’ or supper at an eatery there causing two other individuals to be infected.

Story 4

20 individuals had a communal ‘buka puasa’ cooking session at a surau in Marang. 26 individuals in total were later confirmed positive of Covid-19 and as many as 283 individuals were identified as close contacts.

Story 5

A person went to Kuala Lumpur for a meeting without doing a prior checkup and returned to work as normal. 36 people later contracted Covid-19 and thousands of other people had to be tested.

Over 1,000 cases have been recorded in Terengganu between 4 to 18 May.

“Dozens of other stories can be shared to show that SOPs are not being followed,” added the doctor saying that people are taking health guidelines for granted – some out of spite.

“Because they don’t care, they ignore and belittle SOP compliance. They consider everything to be made up and troublesome,” she said.

She ended her rant by saying that it was up to the people of Terengganu to control Covid-19 infections in the state.

If the rakyat of Terengganu think that they are immune to Covid-19, go ahead, enjoy your activities.
