An online movement is providing a safer space for students and ex-students to come forward with experiences of sexual harassment and assault they’ve lived through or encountered in Malaysian schools

The SaveTheSchoolsMY (STC) project, on Instagram, took off in the wake of public outcry to #MakeSchoolASaferPlace and addressing the bigger problem of rape culture and sexual harassment in our society.

With over 200 anonymous confessions posted publicly on the page, @Savetheschoolsmy provides direct first-hand accounts from boys and girls as well as the men and women who’ve survived sexual abuse during their time in kindergarten, all the way up to university.

STC’s founder, 26-year-old Media Executive Puteri Nuraaina Balqis revealed how crucial the project was given the horrible things that are and have been taking place in our schools and the overall dismissal of the topic by uncompromising Malaysians.

Maybe if people can learn more real-time stories about the horrible culture, then more people will believe in the cause and resonate in solidarity. Approximately 30% to 40% of the stories took place in primary schools, Kafa (Islamic) classes and even kindergartens.

She also told that more and more men have come forward with stories of sexual assaults and how these experiences have affected their lives.

Since the project began in April, STC has amassed a collection of some 600 stories from denizens across the country.

These stories as mentioned are available for public view on STC’s Instagram page – which included harrowing tales – ranging from the ones that’ll make you feel uncomfortable, to the sickening ones that have left people scarred.

If you or anyone you know would like to share your own experiences with sexual harassment or assault, you may do so anonymously (HERE) via filling in a simple Google Form hosted by STC.
