The capacity of the beds in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) wards in Penang to treat Covid-19 patients has reached 100% while for non-ICUs it has exceeded 70%.

Sinar Harian quoted the state’s Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow who said that Covid-19 cases nationwide recorded an increase with 1,682 cases in Penang for the 18th week of 2021 which is from 2 to 8 May.

The Minister asked those with symptoms to seek treatment or undergo screening immediately.

Don’t procrastinate as there are some cases in which getting treatment late ends in severe conditions such as shortness of breath and death. Case reports are on the rise and the utilization rate of state medical facilities as a whole has exceeded 70 per cent for non-ICU beds.

It’s reported that the clusters stem from infections in the workplace, educational institutions, social and economic activities.

Johor and Klang Valley also maxed out

Previously, it has been reported that beds in ICUs in Klang Valley have reached maximum capacity with the Health Ministry planning on converting normal units to treat to more patients.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah previously said that one of the reasons for the overload was due to an increase in young patients who developed severe symptoms.
