As Malaysia’s Covid-19 numbers continue to rise, hospitals in Klang Valley are struggling to keep up as most are reaching their full capacity. This includes private hospitals, as well as Malaysia’s main Covid-19 facility, Sungai Buloh Hospital.

Healthcare portal CodeBlue reports Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba confirming that Sungai Buloh Hospital, Malaysia’s dedicated Covid-19 hospital, was at a 90% of bed occupancy rate.

The Health Ministry (KKM)’s corporate communications unit stated that the hospital is currently only accepting Stage Four and Five patients or complex Covid-19 cases.

These are the severe stages of disease progression where patients at Stage Four experience pneumonia and require supplemental oxygen, while patients at Stage Five are critically ill with difficulty breathing and require ventilation.

Sarawak General Hospital’s (SGH) Covid-19 intensive care unit (ICU) and wards are now full.

A medical officer from SGH informed CodeBlue that some Covid-19 patients in the ward, who are on oxygen therapy are still awaiting ICU beds. Another anonymous medical officer admitted that the admission team and wards are overwhelmed with patients.

Sibu Hospital’s ICU has also hit full capacity, and the hospital is forced to step down critical Covid-19 patients with poor prognosis from intensive care after 28 days when they are no longer infectious.

Associations of Private Hospitals Malaysia (APHM) president Datuk Dr Kuljit Singh also chimed in to sound the alarm that most private hospitals – especially in Klang Valley and possibly Johor- are running out of space to accept Covid-19 patients.

In a statement, Dr Kuljit explained that the spike in cases over the past 14 days led to Covid-19 patients occupying all available beds in the designated wards, with even the isolated intensive care unit beds constantly filled up.

The biggest fear right now is a possible collapse of the healthcare system due to the non-availability of beds and oxygen treatment.

We hope the public will take this shortage of beds in hospitals seriously and be responsible to make sure the spread of Covid-19 is curtailed, and all preventive standard operating procedures are adhered to.

The latest KKM Covid-19 data (29 April) show a total of 309 cases in ICU whereby 147 patients require ventilation. The national Covid-19 death toll has also been on the rise with double digit death recorded daily in the past week alone.

Malaysia has lost 1,492 lives to the coronavirus.
