Different people have different ways to retire, some might get something from their company, while others might get a farewell dinner for their service.

But there’s a few who go out with a bang like this retiring Malaysian Army (Tentera Darat Malaysia) officer who leapt out of an aircraft – 10,000 feet above ground – to relinquish his duties in a clip which went viral on Twitter.

Posted on the social media platform by user @ShahwalAdli_, the video showed the officer jumping off a moving airplane along with several other people, before giving the squadron’s symbolic baton to one of the officers.

He explained that whole thing is actually a hand over ceremony by the First Warrant Officer who is retiring soon to the Second Warrant Officer.

Each squadron has their own tradition

He told TRP that the ceremony is unique to his squadron – the 11th Special Operations Regiment Air Reconnaissance Squadron, which is also a Special Service Group.

Shahwal said the tradition has been going on for years and each company has their own way of sending off their officers and mentioned that his unit is divided into several squadrons, each with their own unique roles:

  1. Anti-Terrorism Squadron (Uniform)
  2. Air Reconnaissance Squadron (Sierra)
  3. Ground Reconnaissance Squadron (Tango)

For his squadron, their role is according their motto which is to provide reconnaissance in the airspace.

Some of their tasks are to infiltrate, spy and destroy via the air.
