Malaysians were blown away by the unbeleafable talents of one local youth and the stunning “coconut bonsai” plants he creates during his free time.

17-year-old Alif Fitri Yazid from Banting, Selangor has received well-deserved attention after his elder sister, 23-year-old Atika Yazid, shared images of his incredible gardening skills on social media.

Taking on the nickname “Kelapa Boy”, Alif managed to grow a shelf full of the miniature coconut creations during his time away from school amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Being a true DIY master, Alif even made the shelves for his potted plants from recycled materials found around the house.

“Bonsai”, which comes from the Japanese word meaning “planted in a container”, is a horticulture technique used to make decorative plants that are carefully grown, cut and shaped into miniature versions of themselves.

It is said that skilful bonsai artists can take many years to both perfect their technique and cultivate a plant to an intended design.

Earthy soul

Speaking to TRP, Kelapa Boy’s sister, Atika, revealed that Alif had no formal gardening skills but enjoyed helping out their father around the yard.

“He has his soul in the earth”, wrote Atika laughing, as she explained that Alif had spent his free time during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period in 2020 to sharpen his green thumbs with videos and gardening tutorials on YouTube as a means to make extra money.

Atika said that her brother has been selling his creations for around RM40 to RM65 to his father’s friends and neighbours who are quite fond of his decorative plants besides promoting his bonsai for sale on Facebook.

Proud Kelapa Boy

Like most great artists, Alif said that he takes great pleasure from his work.

Since he’ll be continuing with school this year as well as taking on the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams for 2021, Alif told TRP that he will proceed with his hobby/side hustle for as long as he can.

I’ll continue until I run out of plants because I did it to fill my free time, for fun. When it’s done and when people buy it, I feel satisfied.
