Ever been annoyed by the inexplicably loud zoom of a motorcycle revving past? Well, you might find some relief in knowing that those who modified their exhaust pipes that cause noise pollution are actually liable to punishment of jail time and fines!

It’s ILLEGAL

Bernama reports Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief Datuk Azizman Alias explaining that this is an offence under Rule 103 of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Rules 1959 (LN 170/1959).

Exhausts including silencers must be maintained and be in good condition, meaning that vehicle exhausts also cannot be modified to cause loud sounds.

So, owners of these noisy bikes can face up to 6-months in jail and a fine of up to RM2,000!

Anybody who modifies an exhaust pipe to the point of disturbing public peace is found to have committed an offence.

Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987 stipulates that the police have the power to seize motorcycles to prevent repeat offence.

Azisman explained that the police would conduct integrated operations with the Environment Department (DOE) to check motorcycle owners’ compliance with the permitted exhaust pipe noise emission level.

The DOE can also issue a compound if the pipe noise emission level is breached.

So if you’re thinking about modifying your vehicles, make sure you get approval from the Road Transport Department (JPJ). Why risk jail time?
