15 new Covid-19 cases were detected in Sandakan, Sabah yesterday, marking the first Chinese New Year reunion dinner cluster that has been found so far.

Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said that the Mawar cluster from Sandakan was from a reunion family dinner on February 12, the first day of Chinese New Year, at a private residence.

According to him, the index case exhibited symptoms and went for a screening at a private clinic. When she tested positive, her close contacts went for screenings as well, resulting in an additional 14 positive cases of Covid-19.

All close contacts were related to one another and had dined together for the festive season.

Sabah is currently under the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO), which has more relaxed rules for residents. However, this cluster is a timely reminder to all that just because SOPs have relaxed, doesn’t mean we should neglect our health and safety too.
