Health has never been more of a priority in these unprecedented times, and Chinese New Year is a good time as any to wish your loved ones good health in the coming year. This makes a basket of healthy summer fruits the perfect auspicious gift to usher in the new year.

The biggest lesson this pandemic has taught us is the value of our health. We’re more conscious of consuming healthy, nutritious foods.

Fruits are good sources of vitamins and minerals

A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive problems, and have a positive effect upon blood sugar, which can help keep appetite in check.

Traditionally, oranges and tangerines are the fruits often gifted during Chinese New Year. However, eating a variety of types and colours of fruits gives your body the mix of nutrients it needs. This not only ensures a greater diversity of beneficial plant chemicals but also creates an eye-appealing gift.

They contain an abundance of antioxidants such as vitamins A, E and C – vital tools that work to strengthen your immune system to fight off infections. The properties in vitamin C additionally increases the production of collagen for healthy skin.

These jewel-toned fruits are also brimming with high levels of potassium, which is a key nutrient in regulating blood pressure and promoting the health of your nerves and muscles.

Alongside their excellent health benefits, peaches, nectarines, plums and apricots are also wonderfully delicious, making them a perfect healthy treat to gift your friends and family members.

Stone fruits and their symbolism in Chinese culture

Some summer fruits have a strong connection to Chinese culture.

Peaches, for example, represent longevity and prosperity. This makes the fruit and its blossoms very important in Chinese culture, especially during the Chinese New Year festivities. Peach blossoms also symbolise romance, prosperity, and growth.

In traditional belief, peaches also represent immortality and unity. While immortality may be out of reach, health, longevity and unity are things we can actively work to achieve.

Meanwhile, plums and apricots are often used as holy offerings in Buddhist temples as they are symbolic of good luck, wealth, fortune, and gold.
