Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is scheduled to make an announcement on Monday regarding Malaysia’s future efforts to combat the spread of Covid-19 as cases across the country continue to rise.

Senior Minister (Defence) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that the government is assessing immediate course of action to control the spread of the pandemic including enforcing tighter standard operating procedures (SOP) to reduce public’s movements.

Malaysians have been speculating that the government plans to reintroduce a full lockdown in order to limit unnecessary travel and movement through the country.

Checkpoints and police roadblocks nationwide were remove following the governments decision to allow inter-district and inter-state travel in December 2020. Since then, Malaysia has continued to record more and more cases of the coronavirus at a steady rate.

On 7 January, the nation recorded its highest number of new infections with 3,027 cases placing the nation’s Covid-19 case total at 128,465.
