Sabah school students who gathered at their usual spot on a suspension bridge to get internet access narrowly escaped death after falling 18 metres when the bridge collapsed.

It is reported that about eight students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Ulu Sugut were gathered in the middle of the bridge to follow online classes before it suddenly collapsed around 9pm.

One student, (16 year old female) had broken bones in her thigh and shin while another male student had spinal injuries. The other students are reported to have sustained light injuries.

All 8 students are receiving treatment at the Ranau district hospital – which is roughly a six-hour drive away on muddy, dangerous roads that requires a four-wheel drive.

What happened

According to Malay Mail, the bridge in Kampung Gusi, Ranau is one of the few spots where villagers can get mobile signal, which was intermittently available after dark.

Internet connection in Kampung Gusi is really bad, but it is better at night in the suspension bridge area.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Joachim Gunsalam explained that the rickety wooden bridge was about 10-years-old and had undergone repairs throughout the years.

He assured that he will visit the village himself to check on the condition of the bridge while reaching out to the Prime Minister’s Department for allocations to rebuild the bridge.

Currently, the only means of transport for the villagers across the river are small boats.

I hope that the villagers can be patient and strong through this while we rebuild the bridge. I offer them my sympathies and hope the injured students will recover soon.
