An article published by a scientific journal website known as Nature negatively implied that Malaysia was lacking in terms of state healthcare.

The journal titled “The scientist-gardener who is harnessing tobacco’s power to heal” contained a quote from London-based molecular immunologist Audrey Teh, who claimed to be a Malaysian, mentioned how families within the country were bankrupted by medical bills.

Such statements were rebuked by Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah via Twitter two days ago.

It is an incorrect and gross misrepresentation of the national health system.

The Health director-general went on to further state that Malaysia had achieved effective universal health coverage (UHC) in the 1990’s via tax-funded provision of healthcare services.

The Malaysian government provided highly subsidized healthcare for all residents through its extensive network of public hospitals and clinics.

He also added that a comprehensive range of services including health promotion, disease preventions, curative and rehabilitative care were covered by the system.

All Malaysians are able to gain access to healthcare services with affordable payments while populations that are less fortunate such as the poor, disabled and the elderly are provided free of charge, he continued in a statement released yesterday.

This creates a strong safety net as no one is denied access to required healthcare, regardless of their ability to pay.

According to Dr Noor Hisham, World Health Organization (WHO) also continues to acknowledge Malaysia in terms of providing a quality filled healthcare system and a well-trained workforce.

As a matter of fact, Malaysia was ranked no.1 in world’s best healthcare category in the 2019 International Living Annual Global Retirement Index.

As seen in the International Living website, our country was ranked first for its world-class healthcare services and sophisticated infrastructure.

There are both private and public hospitals to suit one’s needs albeit the private hospitals being a tad more expensive, it is more up to Western standards than the public hospitals and treatments are affordable for minor visits.

Pharmacists, similar to the rest of the Malaysian medical staff are also very well-trained and informed. The Malaysians are friendly people, but it is the genuine interest they take that never ceases to impress, the website finished.
