Today, the suburban town of Subang Jaya officially became a city.

For a place that has roots as a rubber plantation just a mere 50 years ago, officially obtaining city-status is a pretty big deal! In a couple decades, and especially in recent years, endless malls, restaurants, and pubs have sprung up, turning into a vibrant and busy township.

Unfortunately, Subang stepped into cityhood faced with water cuts and frustrated residents, with some even questioning if this was the right move.

Others brought up the lack of public infrastructure that would be expected of a city.

Currently, Subang Jaya does not have public healthcare facilities such as a government hospital or clinic (klinik kesihatan).

Subang locals wanting to make use of government health facilities will need to travel to other areas such as Kelana Jaya, Puchong, or Shah Alam to do so.

Ironically, Subang residents will need to travel out of their city for public healthcare.

However, according to The Star, a government clinic in Subang Jaya is scheduled to open its doors to residents- four years later, in 2024.

Still, despite the criticism, many other Subang residents were pretty stoked to be considered “cityfolk” at last.
