The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a lot of collateral damage. On top of killing more than 1 million people worldwide, it has wreaked havoc on the global economy, caused people to lose their jobs, and separated others from their family members.

One such family has managed to communicate exactly what that feels like through some posts on Facebook. The husband works in Singapore, and due to the Covid-19 travel restrictions between the two countries, he hasn’t seen his wife and kids for at least 200 days.

In a post shared on Facebook recently, you can see the husband excitedly making his way to the jetty at Woodlands Waterfront Park.

Holding his mobile phone in his hand, he asks the person on the other side of the line of their whereabouts. A woman’s voice answers telling him that she’s right there, wearing a black and white shirt, “Can you see me?”

In another clip, you can hear children’s laughter coming from his phone, “Hi papa!” The man approaches the edge of the jetty and waves.

In a separate post, you get to see his family’s viewpoint from Johor

What makes the whole situation more sad is the fact that no matter how hard you look in the video, you can’t spot his family from across the water. From the other side, you can’t see him either.

Here’s a better picture of what they’re looking at

Fortunately, the family has hope

Although the recovery movement control order (RMCO) in Malaysia has been extended to 31 December 2020, and travel restrictions have been said to remain closed until then as well, Johor has urged the government to consider reopening the border to Singapore.

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad has shared that he’s met with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to discuss speeding up the process of fully opening the border between Singapore and Malaysia.

He has also reportedly submitted working papers and standard operating procedures for the move to the Foreign Ministry.

Let’s hope the Prime Minister will consider this, and that the proposed standard operating procedures can also keep the Covid-19 transmission between the two countries under control.
