The Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) has requested that higher education institutions (IPT) make an exception for students from Covid-19 red zone to register and return to campuses.

Who said what: Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad said that students can return to their respective campuses according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) after the situation recovers. She also said that the registration, as well as teaching and learning process for the affected students can be conducted online.

Why it matters: All university and college students are scheduled to fully return to campuses next week in October, just as the number of Covid-19 cases and red zones surged in September. MOHE’s announcement comes a day after the Health Ministry declared that travellers entering Peninsular Malaysia from Sabah between 27 September to 10 October will have to be screened for Covid-19 and undergo mandatory 14 day self-quarantine.

As of 26 September, the five red zones are largely in Sabah with one in the Peninsular, which are:

  • Tawau, Sabah – 332 active cases
  • Semporna, Sabah – 212 active cases
  • Lahad Datu, Sabah – 97 active cases
  • Kunak, Sabah – 51 active cases
  • Kota Setar, Kedah – 44 active cases

Malaysia currently has 851 active Covid-19 cases.
