A rare blue moon will show up at the end of October, just in time for Halloween.

Blue moons do not actually show up blue. Like the common phrase “once in a blue moon”, it refers to a fairly rare phenomenon, especially that of an extra full moon happening within the same month.

Usually, blue moons only happen once every two to three years, which does make it quite rare and lucky that it’s happening this year.

In the month of October, there will be 2 full moons, first in the wee hours of the 2nd and then again on the 31st at an extremely appropriate 11pm. These are just the peak times for the full moon, and the usual roundness of a full moon will be visible for around 2 to 3 nights.

In a stroke of good luck, this means that you can start off the month by celebrating with the Mooncake Festival and then end the month with a spooky Halloween moon-viewing!

Even though blue moons happen every 2-3 years, the very next time there will be a blue moon on Halloween again will be in 2039, so don’t miss out this year!
