Hanna Alkaf’s new book was released in August this year, and already it is on its way to being a prize-winner. Her earlier debut novel set during the May 13th racial riots, The Weight Of Our Sky, similarly bagged the Freeman Book award and has even been reproduced as a webcomic.

This time, The Girl and the Ghost is delightfully local tale that features Malaysian folklore, namely a ghostly grasshopper pelesit and his owner, and the extraordinary power of friendship between them.

The book is a finalist for the Kirkus Prize young reader’s literature category. Right now, the book is listed alongside three other books, all written by American authors. Hanna Alkaf is the only non-American author to have made it as a finalist in this category!

If you’re interested in picking up The Girl and the Ghost, it is now available in local bookstores, as is her previous novel, The Weight Of Our Sky.
