As many as 72,000 Malaysians have lost their jobs since the beginning of the movement control order (MCO) in March.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan told Mingguan Malaysia that these were the latest figures according to the Socso’s (Social Security Organisation) records, adding that these numbers excluded Malaysians working informal businesses who are not registered with them.

Informal sectors we do not have the data, for example, unregistered eateries that did not register with Socso.

Saravanan also said that about 500,000 youths are now jobless, putting the total unemployment rate at 5.3% (826,100 people). These figures were based on the government’s data in May.

With the expected return of about 350,000 fresh graduates and 200,000 Malaysians from abroad, Saravanan thinks the number of unemployed individuals could rise to one million in September.

However, he trusts that the gig economy could help the youth generate more income while waiting for other options.

The government does not allow foreign workers at the moment to give more opportunities to local employees. Therefore I have asked all industry players, especially in the service sector, frontlines such as cashiers, among others to utilise local workers.

He also believes that, with the recent cutback on foreign workers, the service industry will potentially grow under the pandemic and offer more employment opportunities for locals.
