The National Blood Centre (PDN) implores Malaysians to showcase their patriotism this Merdeka-month and “be a hero” by donating blood.

According to PDN Director Dr. Noryati Abu Amin, though the country’s blood reserves are still in “good shape”, as it stands, blood is a perishable commodity that needs constant re-supplies so that we simply don’t run out.

Speaking at the launch of Astro’s Malaysiaku Kita Selamat Bersama campaign in celebration of our nation’s 63 years of independence, Dr. Noryati Abu invites the rakyat, especially the youths and younglings to keep each other safe by regularly donating blood to the national blood bank and blood donation drives, nationwide.

The doctor explains the nation’s blood banks functions just like any other financial banking institution, whereby fresh deposits are needed to keep the account balance in check.

Moreover, Dr Noryati revealed that around 80% of Malaysia’s blood bank stocks come from donation campaigns outside of PDN facilities, like the ones we often come across at public events and conventions or even at your local shopping malls.

Notably, outcomes of the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent nationwide Movement Control Order (MCO) had led to interruptions to blood collection activities.

She acknowledged that because of restrictions during the MCO and rising fears of infection among the public, people have been a little apprehensive about donating their blood.

Dr. Noryati gives her assurances that PDN and healthcare professionals nationwide are doing everything they can to ensure that the blood donation process remains safe and secure.

According to the doctor, throughout the pandemic, Malaysia’s blood banks have been dependent on the supplies received from existing blood donors.

PDN is more than determined to have new donors come in to share some of their precious fluids for the good of the country.

TRP managed to steal the good doctor for a quick PSA on the importance of blood donations, have a listen to what she has to say below;
