“Help Us” – pleads the National Blood Centre (PDN) to Malaysians on social media as the reserves of blood types A and B are running dangerously low.

Sharing a picture of a nearly empty blood bag storage shelf, PDN revealed that the shortage is due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic that has affected the frequency of periodic blood donations that has been vital in keeping the blood supply adequate for use in the healthcare system.

Blood is often needed in surgical cases, accident victims, treating leukemia patients, cancer, thalassemia, heart disease, complications of bleeding during childbirth, haemophilia and other conditions.

However, the national blood supply has been running into critical deficiency issues with the Covid-19 pandemic placing pressure on Malaysia’s healthcare systems as blood donation drives and centres ground to a halt during the Movement Control Order (MCO) over fears of the coronavirus.

As the Health Ministry sent out pleas to Malaysians to come donate blood while rationing blood supplies to alleviate the shortage, there is little reprieve as supplies continue to diminish.

HELP US…. BLOOD DONORS FOR TYPES A and B REQUIRED IMMEDIATELY.
We APPEAL to the generous blood donors to come forward to donate blood at an immediate rate at the National Blood Center or a nearby blood bank.

The Health Ministry has also joined in the call for blood donors, pleading for Malaysians to help them save the lives of others.
