A special education teacher based in Sandakan, Sabah, has been providing free face masks to his students, because some could not afford to buy new face masks and would resort to reusing a soiled, dirty one.

What you need to know: Fazri Hassan noticed that his students were wearing dirty masks with the ear loops sewn back on. Upon asking further, he realized a number of his students consistently reused face masks for two or three days to save money. He and his colleagues then pooled their funds to provide free face masks to students who could not afford to buy new ones for themselves.

Who said what: Fazri Hassan said that he shared the story in hopes that it could bring attention to other young children or students who might face similar struggles. He also encourages the public to reach out to nearby schools and see if they are in need of protective gear.

Why it matters: As schools reopen, students and teachers must follow strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) that include wearing a mask at all times. However, some students may not be able to afford buying a new face mask every day, and might resort to dangerous ways to adhere to the new rules. Reusing face masks is bad as it can harbour bacteria and germs, but reusing other people’s worn face masks is even worse and can potentially pose a bigger risk than not following SOPs.

While most social media users commended Fazri Hassan on his generous actions, others also noted that this responsibility should not fall on the shoulders of teachers, and should instead be taken up by authorities instead.
