Govt Will Launch A Guideline For Community Gardens By The End Of August

Before the end of August, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government expects to launch guidelines and policies for community gardens to be developed in urban areas across Malaysia.

What you need to know: According to Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin, community garden initiatives will be coordinated by the ministry and its agencies, such as the National Landscape Department and related authorities.

The guidelines are currently being fine-tuned to ensure that any opening of community gardens will be done according to a standard.

At the moment, Malaysia has no such policies, so it can get confusing for people who are interested in operating gardens. Zuraida hopes the guidelines will include what type of land is allowed to be used, approved construction methods and other gardening details.

Why it matters: Guidelines will ensure urban gardeners will not have difficulty in referring to and making applications at the various agencies required.

The ministry also hopes that the guidelines will encourage and expand community garden programmes such as the pilot project at the People’s Housing Project (PPR) Lembah Subang 2, Petaling Jaya.

At the same time, such a guideline will mean that Malaysians will no longer have to face (or hear of) such heartbreaking stories of (old people’s) gardening projects being torn out of the ground by authorities.
