Senior Minister (Defence) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced today that wearing face mask in public is mandatory from 1st August onwards.

Speaking to reporters at the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) press conference on 23 July, the Senior Minister explained that the decision was made following the return of double digit new Covid-19 infections in the country.

The Health Ministry had determined that the rise in cases is due to the lackadaisical attitude of Malaysians in adhering to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place. We can see people are not observing social distancing or wearing face masks.

He states that wearing face mask is mandatory in crowded public areas, including public transportation.

Fabric and homemade face masks are allowed, but Ismail Sabri explains that it must follow specifications allowed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) – which will be distributed by the Health Ministry in the near future.

The announcement comes shortly after the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry told Parliament that the wholesale and retail ceiling price of face masks will be lowered to RM1.15 and RM1.20 respectively starting August 15, from the current RM1.45 and RM1.50.
