Shah Alam’s three libraries reopened earlier this month, but their daily visitors since then are almost half of their usual number pre-MCO.

What you need to know: Before the Movement Control Order (MCO), they would receive around 50 to 60 visitors daily at each library. Now, during the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO), they receive only 30 to 40 visitors a day, mainly visitors returning and borrowing books, and some tertiary students who use the premises to complete assignments.

However, all hope is not lost as it likely means people are choosing not to go out, and are instead reading digitally as demand for e-books from the National Library (PNM) soared during MCO. PNM noted that in March alone, nearly 40,000 of the library’s digital books were borrowed compared to an average of about 15,000 during regular months.

Who said what: Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) corporate communications head Shahrin Ahmad noted that all visitors to the libraries must abide by standard SOP and note the libraries’ new opening times.

Why it matters: Libraries are a safe space for many people and play a variety of roles for different communities. For some, it’s a quiet place to study, or to learn about new things, or to find more books, or to use the public computers, or for children to engage in community-led activities.
