Tokyo tested for infections among workers in their red-light districts and found more than 200 cases daily in four of the last six days, causing the metropolis to lift its alert level to the highest level.

What you need to know: Tokyo recorded an all-time high of 243 cases last Friday, turning infections among young people in their 20s and 30s. Tokyo is most populous city in Japan with almost 14 million people living there. Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike notes that Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been pursuing a contradictory policy by encouraging social distancing but also promoting domestic summer travel to support tourism.

Why it matters: Tokyo is not the only place to retighten its lockdown after a series of Covid-19 case spikes. Just a week ago, Melbourne went into lockdown again as they recorded new active cases. The challenge of containing the virus persists, a constant reminder that the pandemic isn’t over.
