There’s no denying that Parliament is important, even if it feels a little like a telenova drama sometimes. After all, Parliament discusses and decides on issues that would impact the country. They are the elected representatives of the people, to fight for our cause, and to make Malaysia a better place for all.
Undoubtedly, heavy are the shoulders that carry this responsibility. The parliamentary Speaker of the House of Representatives presides over the House’s debates and determines who can talk about what.
In remuneration of their service, the Speaker of the House is allowed certain generous privileges. According to Statute Paper No.95 of 1980, pursuant to section 5 of the Members of Parliament (Remuneration) Act 1980 (Act 237), the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has bestowed multiple work privileges for being Speaker of the House.
In a nutshell, Speakers are given allowances for:
– Residence (either Government quarters or allowance up to RM4,000 monthly)
– Entertainment allowance (up to RM9,860)
– House upkeep (RM10,000 a year) including a dining set for 50 people
– Up to 4 domestic servants (including a gardener)
– Utilities (free)
– Handphones (costing not more than RM3,000)
– Personal drivers (up to 2)
– Free firearm license
– and the usual work allowances such as lodging and mileage.
Additionally, they receive a one-time sum of RM10,000 upon appointment of the position.
All these perks, allowances, and benefits are in addition to the monthly salary of RM31,000 that the Speaker of the House of Representatives receives.
Parliamentary members already earn a 5-figure salary from representing us, though of course it depends on the position they hold.
Perhaps we treat Speakers of the House of Representatives so well because we project the hope of owning such comforts onto them. After all, they represent us, do they not?
