Meet Dr Masliza Mahmod, the scientist who made the nation proud by being the first Malaysian woman to be promoted as an Associate Professor at the prestigious Oxford University, UK.

The university announcement made on 10th July revealed that the cardiologist expert was promoted as Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine.

The good news even got a shoutout from Health Deputy-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, who congratulated her on social media!

But looking at her impressive list of accomplishments, this achievement hardly comes as a surprise.

After obtaining a DPhil (PhD) in Cardiovascular Medicine from Oxford, the 47-year-old scientist went on to become the Head of Clinical Trials Group at the University of Oxford Centre for Clinical Magnetic Resonance Research (OCMR), Division of Cardiovascular Medicine.

In 2018, she made headlines for heading a pilot study on a drug to reduce excessive heart fat, known as cardiac steatosis, with support by the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

According to the Oxford’s Radcliffe Department of Medicine website, Dr Masliza’s research focuses on the use of cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) and spectroscopy techniques for early detection of cardiac abnormalities and to find new treatment for patients with cardiomyopathy, heart failure, aortic valve disease and diabetes mellitus.

It doesn’t stop there, though!

She is also currently a member of the Steering Committee of the British Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (BSCMR) Heart Failure Research Task Force and London’s Royal College of Physicians (MRCP).

Dr Maszliza’s history-making feat comes right after the appointment of Malaysia’s Professor Datuk Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman as president of the International AIDS Society (IAS), the first Asian to ever head the global organisation.
