After a photo of his hand-drawn portrait of Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah on a Starbucks cup went viral on social media, this Malaysian artist with autism has been treated to a “Coffee Chat” by Starbucks Malaysia.

Luqman Hakim is a 27-year-old freelance artist who specialises in drawing realistically styled comics. Luqman drew the portrait of Dr Noor Hisham recently, as a tribute to the civil servant’s dedication and hard work.

The portrait was shared on Twitter by a friend of his and it quickly went viral before catching the attention of Dr Noor Hisham himself.

Speaking to Malay Mail about his viral work, Luqman shared how is also an avid coffee drinker, saying that he spends most of his time in a Starbucks cafe where he would usually draw various comic arts and even portraits.

His days usually start as early as 8am and at Starbucks Bangi Gateway, which is nearby where he lives.

But when inspiration comes, I also travel to Starbucks Reserve at Berjaya Times Square or the one in Bukit Bintang Junction for my daily drawing therapy.

Incidentally, Starbucks Malaysia also noticed Luqman’s artwork and his love for coffee and invited him to come and hang out with them at their flagship store in Berjaya Times Square to treat him with a “Coffee Chat”.

At the Coffee Chat, Luqman got the chance to go on an interactive journey with a skilled barista and learned about the origin of the coffee, brewing methods, and exploring the different aromas and flavour notes.

Starbucks Malaysia also surprised Luqman with some nice goodies too, a newly launched Starbucks and Undefeated collaboration merchandise, and a rewards card that includes two-months worth of Starbucks beverages.

According to the company, their latest collaboration with Undefeated was designed to celebrate creativity, resilience, and the indomitable power of the human spirit, making it the perfect gift for Luqman.

Following up on this, we plan to work with Luqman to further create something that we hope to give back to the community and to people like Luqman.

We’re sure Starbucks support must’ve meant a lot to Luqman who had told Malay Mail that he was very touched by all the positive responses he’s gotten from the public since his work went viral.

I felt like I wanted to cry after the pain and challenges that I’ve gone through, all the struggles as an autistic artist.
