Education Minister Dr Mohd Radzi Jidin announced today that schools nationwide will reopen in two phases – on 15th and 22nd July – after three months of closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a live press conference, Radzi explained that the decision was made following the advice of the Health Ministry and the National Security Council (MKN).

Here’s everything you need to know about the reopening of schools:

Two phases of reopening

Students will return to school in two phases as follows:

  • 15th July (Wednesday) – Form 6 (Semester 1), Form 1 – From 4 , Primary 5, Primary 6 and remove classes.
  • 22nd July (Wednesday) – Primary 1 – Primary 4.

There will be 3 models for school operations

First Model – This is for schools that have enough classes and space to house all students in a single – schooling session after accounting for social distancing.

Second Model – This applies to schools that operate with two schooling sessions and single-session schools that have to operate in two sessions to adhere to the social distancing guidelines.

Third Model – This is a rotational model for schools that cannot accommodate all students while adhering to social distancing guidelines despite splitting into two sessions. This is especially pertinent to schools in urban areas with high population density.

For the third model, Form 5 and Form 6 students have to attend classes in school every day while Form 1 to Form 4 students will rotate school attendance accordingly. For primary schools, Primary 1 to Primary 6 students will rotate school attendance as determined by the school administration.

Classroom sessions will continue via home-based learning on the days students do not attend school.

It will be up to each schools’ administration to implement whichever operational model they deem best addresses students’ needs. However, the Education Ministry (MOE) will release the list of schools and the applied operational model a week before schools reopen.

School hostels

The opening of boarding schools will depend on the hostel capacity for each school after accounting for social distancing.

Boarding schools that have the capacity will open as scheduled while schools that do not can reopen with only part of the student body.

According to Radzi, the Health Ministry finds double-decker beds a point of concern.

Therefore, hostel students can only sleep on the lower bunks.

After 14 days, new students will enter the hostels and take the lower bunks while the first batch of students will move to the top bunk.

This procedure will be ongoing until all students return to the hostels.

Tuition centres can reopen

All private institutions registered with MOE as a learning or tuition centres are allowed to reopen on Wednesday, 15th July.
