The Ministry of Health plans to adopt the double-shift system only at crowded government clinics, said Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali.

He said the proposal for the two shifts was to relieve some burden of healthcare workers who have to work for extended hours.

Dr Noor Azmi also added that the Ministry tried to implement the system at several crowded clinics, including in Pahang and Putrajaya around middle of June.

Those that implement the system are clinics that extend their operating hours. We just reduced the extended hours and put them into shifts. It is good so far. I am sure they (staff) are happy as it has reduced their workload compared to those days when they had to work until 10 pm

Earlier, the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) opposed the Health Ministry’s new shift system for government clinics, arguing that public healthcare personnel are already overworked due to manpower shortages and would not be able to cope.
