Malaysia’s former Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq has been shortlisted for the One Young World Politician of the Year award.
He is among 14 other young politicians from various countries nominated for the award. These nominees will be reviewed by a panel of experts who decide on five winners out of the 15 shortlisted.
The panel of judges includes former prime ministers, leaders, and attorneys.
The award recognises outstanding young politicians across the globe who use their positions to make a positive impact on politics and the youth in their communities and country.
On the website, One Young World Politician highlights Syed Saddiq’s many positions – a member of Parliament, Youth Chief of Bersatu and served as Youth and Sports Minister from 2018 to 2020.
They also mentioned Syed Saddiq’s Yellow R Project (Project Reben Kuning) which was launched during his time as the Minister of Youth and Sports and aimed at giving chances of employment to young ex-convicts.
Also on the list are young politicians from the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, UAE, Japan, Afghanistan and the US.
The only other Southeast Asian politician on the list is Sarah Elago, a member of the Philippines House of Representatives and first female representative of her youth party. Sarah is also a member of the ASEAN Parliamentary for Human Rights and serves as Ambassador for a range of non-profit organisations.
The winners will be announced in July and presented with an award at the One Young World 2021 Summit in Munich.
