A Malaysian doctor was just awarded a full scholarship by the University of Oxford to pursue his graduate studies at the prestigious institution.

Dr. Giri Shan Rajahram, who specialises in infectious diseases, recently received the Oxford-Weidenfeld and Hoffmann Scholarships and Leadership Programme. This is a highly competitive scholarship which is awarded to outstanding graduate students from developing and emerging economies, with the aim of funding their studies in Oxford so they may use their knowledge to serve their home countries.

The Sabah-based doctor was successfully granted a place to study International Health and Tropical Medicine in the University of Oxford. Dr. Giri believes that emerging infectious diseases will continue to be a threat in the future, and is determined to further his studies in this area.

The Covid-19 pandemic has showed us that novel and emerging infectious diseases are going to continue to be a threat in the future, and there is a need to train more clinician-scientist to complement and further enhance existing capacity in Malaysia.

Dr. Giri also mentioned that he particularly looks forward to the Research During Outbreak module in his course as it will be led by Professor Peter Horby, the Chief Investigator of the RECOVERY Trial. This is the world’s largest clinical trial that aims to identify treatments for Covid-19 patients.

Aside from practising as a doctor, Dr. Giri also does clinical research and gives guest lectures. His work was also recognised by the Australian government, and received the Australian Endeavour Leadership Programme Awards in 2019. Health Director-General Dato’ Seri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah even congratulated him on Facebook:

Dr. Giri hopes to be able to contribute in keeping Malaysians safe from emerging infectious diseases once he has completed his studies in Oxford.

I wish to contribute further in the current capacity in the Ministry of Health by addressing local and regional health problems with the aim of providing evidence based data to inform policy.
