Several medical associations have objected the Ministry of Health’s proposal for the new shift system and are looking to meet Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to address their concerns.

The joint statement was issued by::

  • Malaysian Medical Association (MMA)
  • Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS)
  • Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS)
  • Malaysian Nurses Association (MNA)
  • Malaysian Nurses Union (MNU)
  • Peninsular Malaysia Health Ministry Drivers’ Union (KPPKKSM).

Lack of staff and infrastructure are cited as some of the reasons why they object to the new system.

An online survey on the implementation of the shift system was also conducted by the MMA, and it showed that 92% of the 9,320 respondents objected to the implementation of the shift system.

Recently, MOH was looking into implementing two shifts at government health clinics to resolve congestion.

Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said before the system can be put in place, the Ministry is aware that there’s a need to increase number of medical personnel.

If we are to implement the two-shift system with existing manpower, many will not agree as they need to work two shifts straight, from morning to night.
