In the midst of a pandemic, mass unemployment, and a global economic downturn, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s lawyer is complaining that his client’s family heirlooms – branded goods and handbags owned by Najib’s wife and daughter – had been destroyed by police.

Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah explained that police had ruined the extravagant collection of handbags (and other stuff) worth some RM680 million that was seized as part of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) investigation in 2018.

The lawyer claimed that authorities did not follow proper procedure and “couldn’t care less” about the expensive items that had supposedly been ruined by magic markers as authorities labeled the items as evidence.

Police sources had said that its May 17 raid on three luxury condominium units at Pavilion Residences linked to Najib had yielded 35 bags of cash in various currencies amounting to RM110 million. — Picture by Hari Anggara

All of this came to light after the Najib family was allowed by the High Court to inspect their seized property which was taken from their high-end property and offices in Kuala Lumpur and is currently being held in a secure vault at Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).

If you’d remember correctly, it was reported that up to RM1.1 billion worth of cash, jewelry, sunglasses, watches, and of course handbags were confiscated from the Najib family, marking the biggest asset seizure in the history of Malaysia.
