Bangladesh refuses to take in Rohingya refugees as the government said that the country is not obligated or in the position to do so, according to reports by Bernama.

A total of 269 Rohingya refugees were detained after the Malaysian coastguard found them on a damaged boat off Langkawi island.

The Bangladesh government also said that the Rohingya have been residents of Myanmar for centuries and are not citizens of Bangladesh.

This is after Malaysia’s Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob told local press that Wisma Putra will ask their counterparts in Bangladesh to take back the refugees if they were found to have fled the country’s camps in Cox Bazaar.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen also said in a statement to their the country’s local media that other nations are welcome to take in the refugees instead of putting the burden solely on them.

Other countries are welcome to take them. Instead of asking us to give shelter, we will welcome the global leadership and organisations to relocate the persecuted 1.1 million Rohingya that are currently temporarily sheltered in Bangladesh.
