Health Director General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says that Malaysia is now in the final recovery phase for Covid-19 following the success of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in reducing the number of new cases.

Speaking to Bernama, he explained that the infectivity rate – or R-naught (R0) of the virus has been reduced to 0.3 from 3.55 before MCO was implemented.

When we implement the MCO, we can reduce the R0 to 0.6 and now (during the CMCO), the R0 is 0.3. It means that an infected person can only infect 0.3 people, so it is decreasing and to look into future cases, the model is working well. Right now, we are in the final stages of recovery.

R0  is a mathematical term that indicates how contagious an infectious disease is and can tell you the average number of people who will get infected from someone with the disease.

Based on 26 days (4 May – 29 May) of data during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO). Dr Noor Hisham explains that only about 200 Covid-19 cases out of the new 1,800 cases involved Malaysians.

Despite the sudden increase in cases involving foreigners at the immigration detention centers, and possible surge with the increased movement during the Hari Raya festive period, he does not anticipate a drastic spike in new Covid-19 cases.

So, if the people follow the SOP we might not get the third wave.

On 25th May, Malaysia recorded a spike of 172 new Covid-19 cases, of which 112 cases were detected in non-citizens held at immmigration depots.

A new Covid-19 cluster involving a local cleaning company employing foreign workers was later identified on 29th May after 24 Bangladeshi nationals tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Yesterday, 30 new Covid-19 cases were reported with zero deaths. Malaysia currently reports a total of  7,732 cases and 115 deaths.
