Malaysia records 103 new Covid-19 cases as of May 29, a day after reporting one of the country’s lowest daily infection count just yesterday.

According to the Health Ministry (MOH), the “jump” was attributed to infections detected among foreigners currently residing in the country.

Health Director-General Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah explained that only 12 Malaysian citizens were tested positive for the virus, while the rest were imported cases involving foreign nationals (7 cases) and locally transmitted infections detected among foreign and migrant workers (12 cases).

The DG also revealed the emergence of a new Covid-19 cluster involving a local cleaning company employing foreign workers.

The “cleaning company” cluster was detected after 24 Bangladeshi nationals were tested positive after undergoing mandatory screenings performed by the company at a private clinic.

Authorities are currently conducting contact tracing and other measures to ensure that the outbreak is contained.

Dr. Noor Hisham mentions that the rise in coronavirus cases among foreign and migrant workers was the result of them being forced to live in poor and cramped living conditions where it is impossible to maintain hygiene and social distancing practices.

MOH welcomes the Human Resource Ministry’s decision to introduce new guidelines in the Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act to ensure the safety, health, and welfare of all migrant workers in Malaysia.
