Over the weekend of the Raya holidays, Malaysia witnessed a large spike of Covid-19 cases, with 172 new positive cases.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) was quick to address concerns that the spike was not due to people moving around for Raya celebrations.

In fact, the spike was due to the spread of the virus at immigration depots isolated from the rest of society. 167 of the cases are local transmissions, including 157 foreigners who are in the country. The remaining 5 cases are imported.

It is likely that Malaysia will continue to see an increase of positive cases of Covid-19 as the MOH continues to conduct more thorough screenings of migrants.

Malaysians need not worry that the spike was due to the relaxation of Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) rules for Raya celebrations or interstate travel.

If there would be any transmissions from the relaxed rules for Raya, the effects would not be immediate anyway, as the virus takes up to 14 days to incubate.

In the meantime, if you have travelled during the Raya holidays, it might be a good idea to stay vigilant and try to remain at home.
