According to Malay Mail, the prices of common greens such as coriander leaves, parsley, and Chinese celery (daun sup) have experienced a drastic price hike since the beginning of Ramadan.

These herbs are commonly used in all sorts of cuisines, which explains the high demand, especially as more people are staying indoors and cooking for their family this year.

The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has noted that the prices of the vegetables have increased fivefold.

CAP President Mohideen Abdul Kader has called on the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to immediately crack down on traders hiking up the prices of these items to take advantage of the high demand during this time.

He also urged consumers to start their own home garden by growing the herbs instead of purchasing them at the local market.
