One of the prime suspects accused of shooting down a Malaysia Airlines (MAS) MH17 plane was arrested in eastern Ukraine on a different charge during a trial beginning in March, according to a BBC Russia report.

Former field commander Leonid Kharchenko, 47, is the only Ukrainian accused of the incident along with three other suspects.

They were named in the investigation by the Dutch-led International Joint Investigation Team (JIT) and are charged with the tragedy that killed all 298 passengers and crew of MH17 in July 2014.

The other three suspects were Russians, Sergei Dubinsky, Oleg Pulatov and Igor Girkin.

Kharchenko was arrested near his home on March 11 for illegally possessing a firearm.

He was previously accused of organizing a terrorist group in 2015 by the Ukrainian authorities, who had been involved in a conflict with Russia for the past six years.
