Security forces including the army and police were seen in KL’s Pudu area, cordoning several roads late last night.

The authorities have described it as a semi-enhanced movement control order (SEMCO). Unlike the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO), the SEMCO allows people to still move in and out of the area if they have valid reasons.

The reason for the SEMCO is to conduct Covid-19 tests on residents and foreign workers. The Pudu area harbours a large number of refugees and undocumented migrants, who are afraid of going to authorities even if they are showing symptoms over fears of being caught or deported.

The SEMCO is merely a way to ensure that there isn’t unnecessary movement of people from the area to prevent an outbreak.

Areas under the SEMCO include Jalan Pudu, Jalan Kancil, Jalan Pasar, Jalan Landak, Lorong Brunei 2 and Lorong Brunei 3.

Two other neighbourhoods in Selayang and parts of KL’s Chow Kit area were placed under similar restrictions.
