With the implementation of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) comes a set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Malaysians to prevent the transmission of Covid-19.

However, this has resulted in some confusion as the implementation varies from premises to premises – especially when it comes to recording customer information at retail outlets and supermarkets.

There’s grouses about how much information these business premises are allowed to ask as videos of customers arguing with employees for refusing to give their IC numbers circulate online.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob clarified on 12th May during his daily CMCO briefing that retailers only need to note down customer names and phone numbers before entering premises, not their IC numbers.

He said that this two pieces of information was enough for recording customer details as stated in the SOP for businesses.

However, looking at the National Security Council’s (MKN) SOP available on the website, the SOP released on 1st May stated that businesses such as restaurants, food halls and kiosks with premises need to record IC numbers of customers.

This requirement is not included in the SOP for grocery stores.
