On 9th May 2018, Malaysians braved the sun, rain and miles to vote for the 14th Malaysian general elections.

The result was a historic event for Malaysia as Barisan Nasional lost the elections after 60 years in power and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad became the world’s oldest elected leader at the age of 92.

While jubilant cries of “Malaysia Baru” echoed in the early days, a political Game of Thrones in February 2020 resulted in the fall of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.

A new political alliance emerged from defected PH parliamentarians, Barisan Nasional and The Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) in the form of Pakatan Nasional (PN) and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was made Prime Minister.

Needless to say, this event shocked the entire nation as it’s the first time a government change happened in Malaysia without a general election.

On the two-year anniversary of the 2018 general election, ‘#Semangat9Mei’ trends online as Malaysians share their memories and experiences on voting during that historic moment.
