Over 600,000 Malaysians Became Jobless In March Alone Due To The Pandemic

Data from the Department of Statistics revealed the adverse effects of Covid-19 on the job market as 610,500 or 17.1% of employees have lost their jobs in March.

Comparatively, 521,300 workers were jobless in the same period last year.

The month saw the government enforcing the Movement Control Order (MCO) on 18 March as the country’s economy went to a halt to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The unemployment rate has increased to 3.9% which can be attributed to the impact of the MCO.

This also caused the increase in unemployment rate for the first quarter of the year to 3.5% from 3.2% in the last quarter of 2019.

The statistic also showed that graduates accounted for 29.3% of the total.

Those between 15 to 30 years old are the most affected with the highest unemployment rate at 6.9%; followed by the 31 to 45 age bracket (1.4%) and the 46 to 64 age bracket (1.1%).
