Since everyone is stuck indoors for the movement control order (MCO), a silver lining is that more people now have the time to read.

The National Library of Malaysia (PNM) has reported a significant jump in the demand for e-books since the beginning of the MCO on March 18.

According to Bernama, PNM Library System and Network Division senior deputy director Aidatul Hasnida Abdul Rani claims that in March alone, nearly 40,000 of the library’s digital books were borrowed compared to an average of about 15,000 during regular months.

New membership registration has also significantly increased for u-Pustaka, as well as unique visitors to the online library portal.

At the beginning of the MCO, the library recorded the highest membership registration in a single day on March 19. A total of 6,069 people registered with the library.

A total of 22,982 new members were registered during the MCO alone. As of April 21, the cumulative number of u-Pustaka members is 501,295.
