While the Movement Control Order (MCO) is extended again to May 12, there is good news as the government is allowing those who are stuck in their hometowns to return to their workplaces.

The police announced that the travel is permitted during a three-day period from 1st – 3rd May and the permits for interstate travel can be applied via the ‘Gerak Malaysia’ app.

To ensure smooth travel, they’ve released a travel schedule for those who are stuck in their hometowns.

  • 1st May – Perak, Johor, Kelantan
  • 2nd May – Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Melaka, Pahang
  • 3rd May – Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Terengganu

How to apply for travel permit

The easiest way to apply is via the Gerak Malaysia app that can be downloaded from Google Play Store, Apple App Store and Huawei App Gallery.

Once you’ve downloaded the app into your smartphone, you have to insert personal details including full name, MyKad or passport number, address, mobile number, and email address.

Before applying for the travel permit, your phone’s GPS must be enabled as the app will verify your current location for approval.

Make sure to update the app on the date of travel to enable the automatic generation of your unique QR code. The authorities will scan this QR code at roadblocks.

Those who do not have the Gerak Malaysia app can apply manually at the nearest police station.

Application for the travel permit is now open until 29th April.

Aside from interstate travel, the app can also be used to apply for 4 types of travel:

  1. Buying essential goods within 10km from their residence
  2. Getting medical treatment
  3. Emergency situations – eg: death of nearest kin
  4. Essential activities – eg: vehicles or home repairs

However, only interstate travel permit application can be done right now.
