How Asean Is Coping With Covid-19

Covid-19 is a pandemic that has affected countries worldwide as nations struggle to contain the coronavirus from spreading.
The same is true for our neighbours in Southeast Asia as each country is putting in measures to stop the coronavirus.
We take a look at how nations in Asean are coping with the pandemic.
Vietnam
Despite being a next-door neighbour to China, where the first Covid-19 outbreak was reported, Vietnam has a low number of infections (268) and zero deaths.
The government now is looking at easing movement restrictions in most parts of the country.
Indonesia
Indonesia is one of the countries badly affected by the coronavirus as cases now approach 7,500 with 635 deaths – the highest in Southeast Asia.
To curb the spread of Covid-19, the government has imposed bans for air and sea travel until the end of June.
Thailand
Thailand’s number of cases now is close to 3,000 with 50 deaths recorded but there are encouraging signs as the new infections in the country have lowered from 188 a day in 22 March to only 13 in 23 April.
Reports point out that this is maybe due to limited testing, and the actual number of infections is believed to be higher.
Singapore
Singapore is another country negatively hit by the coronavirus as they’ve recorded 1,000 new cases per day for three consecutive days, bringing the total close to over 11,000 cases.
The spike in number of cases is mainly due to the government’s crackdown on the infection among foreign workers.
The Philippines
The lockdown in Manilla has been extended until 15 May and measures will be expanded to other regions according to the severity of the outbreak.
They have recorded more than 6,700 cases with 446 deaths.
Malaysia
As of 23 April, Malaysia has recorded 5,603 cases with 95 fatalities and has undergone phase 4 of the Movement Control Order.
After recording more than 100 cases per day, it has slowed down recently as the reports of new cases dipped below 100 for the past few days.
