Malaysian cruising the internet in throes of boredom (tinged with mild anxiety) during the Movement Control Order (MCO) were jolted from their stupor when Astro Awani shared a clip of their interview with Dr Musa Mohd Nordin, Consultant Pediatrician Damansara Specialist Hospital.

Pulling back no punches, the specialist doctor dropped a truth bomb on leaders setting good social distancing examples during this critical Covid-19 period.

As ministers, you must show the best example! If the rakyat sees a minister walking alone, they’ll think “maybe there’s only one bodyguard. There’s no one else around.” But no! We’re seeing 100 bomba personnel around. What kind of social distancing is this?

He goes on to elaborate that the average Malaysian who sees this might think; “if a minister can do this, then it should be okay for me, too. Things are normal then.”

So please, the first thing is through setting a good example. That is important. MKN (National Security Council) must give an example. All the ministers must show this example. Otherwise, we will fail, because we fail from the top.

Before this Dr Musa was quite vocal in the role of ministers on the ground after Housing & Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin got involved with a street disinfection exercise in Kuala Lumpur. He tweeted that she should’ve just stayed at home.

Aside from urging better actions from Malaysia’s leaders, he also expressed his worry on the possibility of another outbreak via imported cases from Indonesia.

Indonesia is a time bomb! We just don’t know. My recommendation to MKN, we have to control our borders. Otherwise, that would be another huge cluster of Covid-19.

His fears are not unfounded. Al-Jazeera reports that Indonesia logs in the highest Covid-19 fatalities in Southeast Asia. In fact, the country’s death rate due to the coronavirus stood at 9.1% compared to the worldwide 5.2%. Meanwhile, Malaysia’s death rate stands around 1.6%.

Even Health Director General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has voiced his concerns on a third wave occurring in Malaysia by imported cases.

So far, the deadliest Covid-19 clusters in Malaysia come from the tabligh cluster that involved Case 136 who returned from Korea. The latest ‘Italy cluster’ involves Case 1,580 – a woman with travel history to Italy that spread the virus to 37 people, leading to 5 deaths.

The Health Ministry is warning that self-isolation, social distancing and strict adherence to the MCO is of utmost importance if we ever want to truly beat the virus.

Stay safe, everyone!
