Basikal lajak: Parents can be jailed for up to five years or fined RM20,000

Parents and guardians who fail to ensure that their children do not take part in basikal lajak activities can be fined up to RM20,000 or jailed for up to five years or both.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigations and Enforcement Department director Deputy Comm Datuk Azisman Alias said that the police can take action against the parents of children who put their own lives and the lives of other road users in danger under Section 33 of the Child Act 2001.

Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, who is a member of the Road Safety Council Malaysia (MKJR) said that although there have not been any action taken against the parents, this does not mean that the parents should not take this issue lightly.

According to Lee, we currently have not seen any parents being held accountable maybe because the authorities are taking into consideration the fact that if the parents are jailed, then there will be no one to take care of the kids.

He highlighted that the priority here is disciplining our young children to make sure that they are not allowed to be outside until the early hours of the morning and take part in unhealthy and dangerous activities (see video below).

Lee also believes that basikal lajak activities should be criminalised because the modifications made to the bicycles encourage users to endanger themselves and other road users.

He added that if children are caught taking part in this dangerous activity, they should be taken into the custody of police and sent back home to their parents so that their parents know what their children are getting up to.

He also believes that the law should be amended to allow the authorities to confiscate the bicycles.
